President Kovind greets people on Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal; Punjabis celebrate Lohri today
President Ram Nath Kovind extended his greetings to fellow citizens for Lohri, which falls on 13th January; Makar Sankranti and Pongal which fall on 14th January, stated an official release.

At this time Earth starts moving towards the sun marking the auspicious period of Uttarayan and start of longer days.

In his message, the President said, "I extend my warm greetings to our citizens on the auspicious occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal."

He wished, "May these festivals bring joy, health and happiness to all."

He added, "The entire nation comes together to celebrate these festivals with gaiety and fervour. Associated with harvest, these festivals are a moment to celebrate the hard work and enterprise of millions of our farmers."

Punjabis are celebrating Lohri today on 13th of January as a festival of harvest and worship of fire with great pomp and show to be marked by traditional songs and dances. Lohri festival calls for family get-togethers, bonfire lighting and lavish dinners with 'sarson da saag' and 'makki di roti'.

Since Lorhi is festival of fertility, prayers are done for fertility of the land. Women are respected since their fertility advances the generations. Therefore, the first Lohri is very important for the newlywed and the new born babies. Also, homage is paid to the Sun God for bringing in warmth and sustaining life on the Earth.

At main places fairs are held. The people gather around the bonfire at night, they sing and dance and throw til, puffed rice and popcorns into the flames of the bonfire. Prayers are offered to the bonfire seeking bountiful crops and prosperity.
